About

Hello, and welcome to The Whisking Tree! I’m Maya, a third generation, self-taught baker born and raised in Minnesota. I am currently studying to become a Social Worker. Aside from baking I enjoy painting, yoga, being outside, and spending time with friends and family.

When it comes to my family, baking is a love language. For over 75 years, my extended family owned a bakery and deli in Hastings, Minnesota called Emily’s Bakery. My sister and I spent countless hours there watching our uncles slice up donuts and ice cookies while we played with the extra dough. A visit from my grandparents meant receiving the beloved “white box”, a donut box filled to the brim with goodies from the bakery. Although the bakery is no longer around, my uncles still teach me how to make my favorite bakery items like Almond Tarts. Aside from making family recipes, I also enjoy experimenting with new recipes and creating desserts inspired by other food. For example; my Tiramisu Brownies or Brown Sugar Pop Tart Cookies.

My intention for this blog is to continue to pass on my family’s recipes, as well as my own, just as they did for 75 years. Baking helps me connect to my family tree, and I hope this blog inspires my readers to connect with their community as well. Whether you’re hosting a dinner party with friends, having a relaxing Sunday morning with family, or treating yourself; there is sure to be a recipe here for you.
